Movies about saints
Mother Teresa: No Greater Love (2022) This is a documentary about the life and work of Mother Teresa. For her great works, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. And she was canonized a saint in 2016. She did this by “doing small things with great love.” Her Missionaries of Charity continue on with her mission today with her love for the poor. In this documentary, you’ll see actual footage of Mother Teresa, and those who knew her or of her interviewed, and the places and people she served.
The Reluctant Saint: The Story of St. Joseph of Cupertino (1962). The true story of a 17th century levitating Franciscan friar and his humble beginnings. He wanted a simple life but God had other plans. He was scorned for much of his life but God gave him gifts. His life is proof that miracles exist, although it was hard for even those closest to him to believe. This is a great story to renew your faith.
Faustina: The Apostle of Divine Mercy (1994) Just over one hour, this is a brief overview of St. Faustina and her beautiful message of Jesus’ divine mercy. A nice quote from the movie is St. Faustina saying, “The grayness and monotony disappear when I look at things with the eye of faith.” St. Faustina had a very strong faith, but her visions of Jesus have been scrutinized, during her life and still after.
Saint Rita (2004) “Start loving again and you will hear the voice of the Lord. Jesus said, ‘I will show myself to those who love me.’” – Mother Superior’s words to Rita in her desolation. St. Rita’s life was hard but she did a lot of good and so was declared a saint. Doing the right thing isn’t always easy. Rita made the hard decisions and her faith is a great example. She married a man who was involved in a bitter rivalry. When asked where her strength comes from, Rita says, “Faith in God and trust in men.” This is an Italian production of St. Rita of Cascia’s life. It’s 3+ hours long but it keeps your attention.
St. Teresa of Avila (2007) A 450 minute mini-series. For Mature Audiences only. Get a glimpse into the time that St. Teresa lived, and what she experienced. In this series, you’ll see how difficult her life was as she was trying to reform the church. She remained obedient to her superiors, but still had a long, hard struggle. Her books are only briefly mentioned, but are very important reads.
